Arsenal have been looking for a new sports director following Edu Gaspar's surprising departure last month. The Brazilian, who was instrumental in revamping Arsenal's football operations, left the club to join Nottingham Forest despite receiving a large salary raise at the Emirates. The Gunners have subsequently moved their emphasis to identifying the best candidate to replace the void left by Edu's departure, and recent events indicate that Arsenal may have found their man.

Foot Mercato indicate Arsenal are in advanced negotiations with Roberto Olabe, Real Sociedad's highly rated sports director. The 57-year-old, known for his strategic vision and talent spotting, has played an important role in Sociedad's recent success. Under his guidance, the La Liga club won its first major title in almost 30 years, the Copa del Rey, in 2021. Furthermore, they made their comeback to the Champions League in the 2023-2024 season, their first in a decade.

According to Sky Germany, Olabe's probable move to Arsenal might have a larger impact on the club's transfer intentions. The Spaniard has a close relationship with Alexander Isak, the 25-year-old striker who now plays for Newcastle United. Mikel Arteta sees the Swedish forward as a possible summer transfer target to improve his attacking options. Although Isak has a contract with the Magpies until 2028, it is thought that Olabe's presence at the Emirates might provide Arsenal an edge due to their strong relationship.

Arsenal under Arteta have seen a significant metamorphosis in recent years, with the club firmly reestablishing itself as one of Europe's best. And, given Olabe's demonstrated ability to build winning teams and acquire top-tier players, the North London club might be primed for greater success in both England and Europe. In the immediate term, they will face Manchester United in the Premier League on Wednesday at Emirates.
