Maguire backs Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim to deliver results, despite his approach being vastly different from Erik ten Hag's

Harry Maguire acknowledges Ruben Amorim's job is considerably more difficult since he is the "total opposite" of Erik ten Hag, but he believes the Manchester United manager can turn around the club's disappointing season.

Amorim has lost half of his ten games as head coach and heads into Monday's league encounter against Newcastle, which will be shown live on Sky Sports, having lost three in a row in all competitions.

The Portuguese inherited a team developed by Ten Hag to play transitional, counter-attacking football, which is completely inappropriate for his style, which emphasizes possession and the use of a high line.

Amorim also like to play with three at the back, but Maguire feels he has what it takes to overcome his slow start and propel the team, which is presently 14th in the league, up the table.

"The thing is with the managers and the styles, it is not like they have come in and they have similar styles," Maguire told Sky Sports in an interview. "They are very contrary in terms of what they want and want.

"So the transition time is going to be difficult. We all have high confidence in the manager and his coaching staff. I am confident things will improve. He understands exactly what he needs to do to reclaim this club.

"He came in and completed what he was supposed to accomplish. "He is very demanding."

United are closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League positions as they prepare to face Newcastle in their last game of an up-and-down 2024, following a 2-0 defeat at Wolves.

Amorim, who will be without captain Bruno Fernandes after receiving a red card, has already been queried about the likelihood of being fired less than two months into his position.

When asked if Amorim is growing annoyed with the bad run of results, Maguire responded: "He is a winner, and I am sure he will be because he despises losing games.

"It is irritating. We want to win football matches and please our fans since this season has not been good enough."

United need a strong victory to relieve pressure on their new manager and raise the mood at Old Trafford, but they face a resurgent Newcastle before facing league leaders Liverpool a week later, again live on Sky Sports.

Due to their current predicament, Maguire claims that there have been no discussions about targets in the locker room.

He said, "We are simply doing everything we can to climb the table. We can't set an objective right now because we're nowhere near good enough or where we want to be in the league standings.

"What we've done so far has been really unsatisfactory. Everyone knows this. We know it's not good enough for this club."
