Nico O'Reilly sparks dull Man City win over Everton with late goal at Goodison

‎Manchester City’s Champions League ambitions received a timely boost after a labored 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park, where 20-year-old Nico O’Reilly showcased a striker’s instinct to snatch a late opener in a match sorely lacking in quality.

‎The left-back, enjoying a breakthrough season under Pep Guardiola, netted in the 84th minute of a game defined more by its lethargy than its entertainment value. Mateo Kovacic added a second in stoppage time to secure the points and lift City to fourth in the Premier League table, albeit temporarily with their top-five rivals yet to play.
‎The opening 45 minutes were as uninspired as they come. Everton’s best effort saw James Tarkowski crash a header against the post, while Matheus Nunes drew a solid save from Jordan Pickford. Kevin De Bruyne’s powerful effort—blocked courageously by Jake O’Brien’s head—was a rare flash of intent. City's sloppiness was epitomized by a foul throw from Nunes.
‎In the second half, Guardiola turned to his bench, introducing Kovacic and Jeremy Doku in an attempt to inject urgency. The gamble paid off. Nunes, despite a rough overall performance, found O'Reilly in the six-yard box and the young defender pounced, flicking past Pickford to give City a barely deserved lead.
‎Everton pushed for an equalizer but were caught out late. In the 91st minute, Gundogan fed Kovacic, who rifled home to kill the contest. The Croatian's second goal in as many games wrapped up a result City needed more than they perhaps earned.
‎Player Ratings

‎Ruben Dias (5/10) – Possession-heavy but unthreatening.
‎Josko Gvardiol (5/10) – Out-jumped, ineffective in buildup.
‎Nico O'Reilly (8/10) – Composed and clinical; the match-winner.
‎Nico Gonzalez (5/10) – Controlled midfield without penetration.
‎Ilkay Gundogan (6/10) – Quiet but assisted Kovacic’s goal.
‎Bernardo Silva (6/10) – Neat but lacked incisiveness.
‎Kevin De Bruyne (5/10) – Frustrated and wasteful.
‎Omar Marmoush (4/10) – Ineffective in attack.
‎Savinho (6/10) – Provided width, substituted early.
‎Jeremy Doku (6/10) – Offered a direct threat.
‎Mateo Kovacic (7/10) – Energetic and clinical.
‎Manuel Akanji (N/A) – Late cameo.
‎Pep Guardiola (6/10) – Substitutes saved the day in an otherwise dire affair.
‎Though far from their best, City's resilience and O'Reilly’s moment of sharpness ensured a valuable three points in a match that will not linger in the memory—except perhaps for the youngster who made the difference.
