‎According to Relevo's Rodra, Alonso specifically requested the pursuit of Carreras, who has enjoyed a breakout campaign with the Portuguese outfit in the 2024/25 season. The 21-year-old, once a youth product of Real Madrid, has found his footing in Lisbon, delivering consistent performances across 42 appearances, contributing four goals and four assists. His attacking prowess from the flank and tactical versatility have reportedly caught the attention of Madrid's recruitment team.

‎Carreras, a native of Ferrol, progressed through the ranks at Racing de Ferrol and Deportivo La Coruña before joining Real Madrid's youth academy in 2017. In 2020, he transferred to Manchester United, but failed to break into the senior team, eventually moving on loan to Benfica in 2023. His performances convinced Benfica to make the deal permanent in 2024 for €6 million.

‎This season, Carreras ranks among the top performers in the Primeira Liga, completing 197 progressive passes — the third-highest tally in the league according to Opta.
