Real Madrid open talks for Benfica star Alvaro Carreras after Dean Huijsen deal at Xabi Alonso's request
As Xabi Alonso prepares to take the reins at Real Madrid, the Spanish giants have wasted no time in reshaping their squad. After reportedly sealing a verbal agreement for Bournemouth’s promising centre-back Dean Huijsen, the club has now initiated formal talks with Benfica to sign highly-rated Spanish left-back Alvaro Carreras.

According to Relevo's Rodra, Alonso specifically requested the pursuit of Carreras, who has enjoyed a breakout campaign with the Portuguese outfit in the 2024/25 season. The 21-year-old, once a youth product of Real Madrid, has found his footing in Lisbon, delivering consistent performances across 42 appearances, contributing four goals and four assists. His attacking prowess from the flank and tactical versatility have reportedly caught the attention of Madrid's recruitment team.
Carreras, a native of Ferrol, progressed through the ranks at Racing de Ferrol and Deportivo La Coruña before joining Real Madrid's youth academy in 2017. In 2020, he transferred to Manchester United, but failed to break into the senior team, eventually moving on loan to Benfica in 2023. His performances convinced Benfica to make the deal permanent in 2024 for €6 million.
This season, Carreras ranks among the top performers in the Primeira Liga, completing 197 progressive passes — the third-highest tally in the league according to Opta. His technical skill set and attacking output make him a valuable asset as Alonso aims to implement a more dynamic and possession-based system at the Santiago Bernabéu.
While Benfica continue their title push — tied on points with rivals Sporting Lisbon — Carreras remains crucial in their upcoming clash with Braga. Meanwhile, Real Madrid are monitoring Barcelona’s result against Espanyol, with a potential title confirmation for the Catalans if they secure a win.
With Alonso’s arrival looming, Real Madrid are showing clear intent to bolster their squad with young, technically-gifted talents — and Alvaro Carreras could be the next cornerstone of their new era.
