Marc Guiu Joins Sunderland on Loan as Black Cats Build Premier League Survival Bid

‎Sunderland have secured the loan signing of Chelsea striker Marc Guiu, continuing an aggressive summer transfer campaign aimed at establishing Premier League stability.

‎The 19-year-old Spanish forward arrives on a season-long loan without an option to buy, according to reports by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. His move follows the club’s high-profile capture of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen, underlining Sunderland’s ambition ahead of their top-flight return.
‎Guiu joined Chelsea from Barcelona in 2024 for a fee believed to be around €6 million. Though he has found the net six times in 16 appearances, most of his minutes came in the UEFA Conference League. Premier League opportunities were limited, with the teenager making just three appearances last season under manager Enzo Maresca.
‎Sunderland’s promotion marks a return to the top division at a time when newly-promoted sides face growing challenges. Over the past two seasons, every club promoted from the Championship has been relegated the following year, highlighting the widening gulf between divisions.
‎The Black Cats have already invested approximately €130 million (£112m) in new signings this summer. That spending reflects a strategic push to not just compete, but to survive in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.
‎Guiu is also a regular in Spain’s Under-19 national setup and will be keen to translate that international form into regular top-flight minutes. His first opportunity may come on August 16, when Sunderland kick off their Premier League campaign at home against West Ham United.
