Borussia Dortmund Admit Jadon Sancho Talks but Say Aston Villa Won Race Due to Financial Limits
Borussia Dortmund have confirmed they held talks over a potential return for Jadon Sancho during the summer transfer window but conceded financial constraints prevented them from completing a deal.
The Bundesliga side explored the possibility of re-signing Sancho after his struggles at Manchester United, where he had been sidelined as part of the club’s reshuffled plans under Ruben Amorim. Director of Football Sebastian Kehl explained that Dortmund could not match the financial demands of the move without external backing.

Sancho became surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and was made available for transfer. Dortmund were keen to bring back the forward who previously enjoyed four successful years at Signal Iduna Park, scoring 50 goals in 137 appearances between 2017 and 2021. The club had also welcomed him back on loan last season, but this summer they were outbid.
Aston Villa moved ahead with a loan deal that includes an obligation to buy, securing Sancho’s services for the Premier League campaign. The 24-year-old is expected to make his debut for Unai Emery’s side in the upcoming fixture against Everton following the international break.
Kehl detailed Dortmund’s financial stance in an interview with Bild, saying: “Of course, we also addressed the issue internally at some point, but there must be a feasible economic framework. With the transfers we have made, we have invested approximately £87 million ($117m) in new players, similar to last summer. But there is no state, no sheikh, no billionaire behind us. We have to earn our own money and, in the long run, can only spend what we previously earned. We have exhausted our financial possibilities for this transfer period.”
The admission highlights Dortmund’s reliance on sustainable business models rather than external ownership, contrasting with clubs able to fund major acquisitions through wealthy backers. Sancho now begins a new chapter in the Premier League with Aston Villa, aiming to revive his career after a difficult spell in Manchester.
