‎Mainoo was widely expected to play a key role for Manchester United following his standout performances for England at Euro 2024. However, the 19-year-old has yet to start a Premier League game under Amorim despite the club’s ongoing injury challenges in midfield. His frustration reportedly led to a loan request in the summer, which United declined.
‎On The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker addressed Mainoo’s current situation, stating: “I don’t think he’s going to change his system now. He’s been very stubborn so far, why change now? It really worries me the way Kobbie Mainoo has been kind of dismissed. Such an incredible, young talent, a local boy as well doing really well. I thought when he came on he did really quite well. I don’t get it, I don’t know if there’s something we don’t know about but it’s slightly baffling to me.”
‎Mainoo had been tipped to build on his breakthrough campaign under Erik ten Hag, but his development appears to have stalled under Amorim. With United continuing to struggle for consistency in midfield, questions are growing about the decision to limit opportunities for one of the club’s most highly regarded academy graduates.
‎Manchester United face Chelsea in their upcoming Premier League fixture. Amorim is under pressure to adjust his approach, and Mainoo’s potential involvement will be closely watched as speculation builds around his future role at the club.
